The Modern Nanays of Mindanao is a support group in the Philippines who advocates and promotes proper infant nutrition through breastfeeding, attachment parenting with babywearing, and love for the environment through sustainable care and parenthood. The group is founded in 2012 started by a group of friends who became first-time mothers and wanted to share their knowledge on infant care. With the slogan, “Make no mom feel alone” – indeed the group aims to help mothers cope up with their struggles in taking care of their babies.
The year 2018 is one memorable year for the group as they have organized three big events in the mission to share knowledge and raise awareness for every member and to its partners.
April 2018: The Great Cloth Diaper Change “Make a Switch: Change Starts with Me”
One in celebrating World Earth Day, the Modern Nanays of Mindanao together with its partners DENR EMB and Ayala Centrio Mall hold a 3-day eco-friendly bazaar at the Centrio Garden. Last April 21, the group organized an event called The Great Cloth Diaper Change where mothers and fathers participated in the simultaneous change and switched to use cloth diapers instead of disposable ones. In line with the Earth Day theme – to End Plastic Pollution, disposable diapers take about 400 years to decompose and that plastic waste is now polluting our nature. By eliminating a single use of plastic can help lessen the waste we are dumping to landfills.
August 2018: Hakab Na – Amuma 2018
In celebration with World Breastfeeding Week, Modern Nanays held a 2-day event inside a mall for mums to participate in the global latch on. The theme “Amuma” is a Cebuano term that means “to take care of someone”, thus mothers, as well as fathers, take care of their children by providing them with proper nutrition, love, and protection.
The first day was participated by mothers from local communities or barangays who actively listened to the tips and lessons on how to provide proper care to their babies and joined in the simultaneous latch. On the second day, MNM invited guest speakers to discuss the important matters in babies nutrition and care.
October 2018: International Babywearing Week “Painting Memories, Weaving Bonds”
Concluding the year 2018, the MNM joined in the International Babywearing Week. One of the advocacies of the group is “attachment parenting” or babywearing, the purpose of the event is to raise awareness and knowledge on the proper way of “wearing their babies” by using all recommended baby carriers.
Truly a remarkable and another memorable year for MNM. Let us continue supporting the group’s advocacies especially when it comes to providing the basic needs of our children and one of them is nutrition and care.
